What we hold, why, and how to have it removed.
Written for the parent or teacher who wants to check before a class uses this, not to be skimmed past.
The short version
We collect what the service needs to work and nothing we cannot justify to a parent. We do not sell data, we do not run advertising, and we do not build profiles for anyone else.
The one thing to understand before a class uses Juror: the arguments you write are sent to an AI provider so the opponent can answer and the score can be produced. Do not put personal information into an argument. Section 4 says who that provider is.
What we collect
What you give us. Your email address, your name, a password (stored only as a bcrypt hash, never as text), the role you choose, the level you set, and a profile picture if you upload one.
What you write. Your debate arguments, closing statements, case briefs and assignment submissions; your messages to the coach; and scenarios you generate.
What the service produces about you. Scores and written feedback on your arguments, progress records, XP, level, streaks and achievements, and which amendments and cases you have opened.
Class membership. Which classes you have joined, which assignments you were set, and what you submitted for them.
Operational records. A log of significant account actions such as registration, password and email changes, and plan changes. These entries include an IP address and browser user agent, because a security log that cannot tell you where a change came from is not much use. We also record events like "a debate was started" to understand how the app is used.
We do not use advertising cookies or third-party analytics trackers. The only cookie we set is the one that keeps you signed in.
Why we hold it
- To run the service: sign you in, run debates, produce scores.
- To show your teacher your work, where you have joined their class with a join code.
- To keep the service secure and to investigate misuse of an account.
- To send the emails described in section 6, which you can turn off.
- To understand which parts of the app are used, in aggregate, so it can be improved.
Students and children
Juror is intended for people aged 13 and over. We do not knowingly collect information from a child under 13 who has registered on their own. If we learn that we have, we delete the account and its contents.
Where a school uses Juror with students under 13, the school is responsible for obtaining the consent required in its jurisdiction, and by enrolling students it confirms that it has. In that arrangement the school directs what happens to student data and we act on its instructions.
Parents and guardians may ask what we hold about their child, ask for it to be corrected, or ask for it to be deleted, by writing to [email protected]. If the account was created through a school, contact the school as well, since it holds the record of consent.
Student work is never used for advertising, never sold, and never published.
Email we send
One welcome message when an account is created, notices when something changes on your account, and practice reminders. Reminders are capped: no address receives more than three messages from us in a day.
You can turn practice reminders off at any time from your account page, or from the link at the foot of any reminder. Notices about your own account are not marketing and are sent regardless of that setting.
How long we keep it
Account information and your work are kept while your account is open. When an account is deleted, its debates, submissions, coach conversations and profile are deleted with it.
Security and audit records are kept for up to twelve months, because their purpose is to be able to look back at a compromised account. Aggregate usage counts that identify nobody may be kept longer.
Your rights
You can see and change your name, email, password and picture yourself on the profile page. For anything else, write to [email protected] and we will:
- tell you what we hold about you;
- correct it if it is wrong;
- delete your account and its contents;
- send you a copy of your work.
We aim to answer within 30 days. Depending on where you live you may have further rights under laws such as the GDPR or the CCPA; we apply the above to everyone rather than only where it is compulsory.
Security
Traffic to the site is encrypted. Passwords are stored as bcrypt hashes, so nobody at our end can read them. Access to the server is restricted. No service can promise it will never be breached; if a breach affects your information, we will tell you and the school, and explain what happened.
Changes to this policy
When this policy changes materially we will update the effective date and ask you to accept the revised terms the next time you sign in. Past versions are available on request.
Want your data removed?
Ask, and we will delete the account and everything in it.
